Teacher Comments:
"My students were able to understand the concepts using the hands-on activities. They felt proud to go home and teach their families safety procedures that not even their parents knew about." Columbian Elementary, Omaha, Nebraska
"Excellent materials, positive feedback from parents. My students have learned valuable safety information while reviewing skills across the curriculum. My students are sharing their information with their peers." South Jones Elementary, Ellisville, MS.
"My students were totally 'into' the subject matter, as it is something that we do not normally cover in our science curriculum. Thank you for providing many of the supplies needed to complete the activities." Richard Elementary, Church Point, LA.
"The home safety checklist generated excellent discussion on what students and parents can do to promote safety. Many students are getting ready to babysit and were interested in how to respond in case of an emergency in the home." Beneke Elementary, Houston, Texas.
"My students really got into the program with all the activities and worksheets they did. It has taught them a tremendous amount about natural gas and pipeline safety." Terral Elementary, Terral, OK.
"This was the perfect way to end the year...hands on, high-interest, and very applicable as students begin to think about the summer months, many of whom are without adult supervisions for much of the day." Highland Elementary, Bakersfield, CA
"What a great way to teach science as well as awareness of the pipeline near our school. I look forward to teaching this unit again next fall." Aiken Road Elementary, Farmington, MN
Principal conclusions:
The Safe at Home program is accomplishing its objective of providing effective, measurable pipeline safety education. Teachers understand and appreciate the opportunity to educate students about pipeline safety. The five-hour instructional program quantifies student learning through a fifteen-question pre- and post-test.
Most significantly, student test results show a 49-81% increase in pipeline safety knowledge.
In addition to focusing on important safety-related life skills, Safe at Home appeals to teachers by supporting existing instructional objectives in pipeline and natural gas related physical and earth science concepts. Teachers appreciate how the program helps their students to develop basic science skills and prepares them for state mandated tests.
Teachers are interested in pipeline safety education, and schools can play an effective role in teaching students—and through them their parents—about pipeline safety, as the Safe at Home pipeline safety education program has demonstrated in twenty-six states.
